Every major city on the planet has a must-see street. Champs Elysees, La Rambla, Orchard Road, Lan Kwai… whatever the size, aesthetic, or even use of these streets, they all have one thing in common: their ability to bring people together and reveal the pulse of the city.
Our lighting enhancement project brief aimed to do just that, encouraging human interaction and demonstrating what Dubai is all about, transforming the boulevard into a tourist destination and a source of pride for residents. This was accomplished through the creation of happenings that acted as permanent ‘artistic lighting’ interventions along the boulevard. These occurrences were spaced approximately every 220 meters and organized into three series.
The Discover series repurposed the existing illuminated tree sticks that were already available around the trees on the boulevard, organizing and mounting them in such a way that new configurations and unique spaces for pedestrians to walk through were created. The maze, the forest, the dunes, the fountain, and the star are all different designs.
The Play Series is a grouping of permanent lighting installations that interact with pedestrians and engage the public. There were two installations: Waiting for Gulliver and Spotted! Waiting for Gulliver explores the concept of scale as well as the significance of the human being. Oversized table lamps adorn the space, casting soft warm white light on the floor. Pedestrians who step beneath them are illuminated in bright, saturated colors, providing a fun and unexpected experience. The Spotted! is a colorful backlit doughnut shaped bench arrangement that invites people to sit and admire their surroundings.
