Description
LOCATION: MONTEVIDEO, URUGUAY
USE: WORSHIP
Scope: INTERNAL LIGHTING DESIGN
Creating a completely new lighting design for an existing building is always difficult, especially when it comes to physical electrical points and load allowances. Even more so when the structure is used for worship, because deeper sensibilities must be considered, and light takes on a whole new dimension and significance.
The lighting scheme is built around a number of complementary strategies. Narrow beam projectors illuminate the structural nerves and arches that support the vault, giving the chapel visual depth, drama, and the necessary illumination levels at the nave. The side vitraux are grazed from the inside, revealing their craft and exposing them as vital façade elements. The religious figures are enhanced by hidden narrow beam projectors, which provide visual targets and add three-dimensionality to the space.
The outcome is a welcoming spiritual refuge, with a clear understanding of its architecture.
