Description
LOCATION: MONTEVIDEO, URUGUAY
USE: WORSHIP
Scope: INTERNAL LIGHTING DESIGN
The lighting design approach for this chapel focused primarily on illuminating vertical surfaces to create a larger sense of space, while emphasizing the displayed sacred art to provide visual targets and mark a strong directionality.
Concealed fittings in the wooden ledge graze the upper walls and illuminate the ceiling, improving the perspective view from the entrance and providing a uniform base illumination at the nave. Two layers of recessed downlights located beneath the ledge both illuminate and highlight the iconography located on the side walls.
To frame the altar, the arches were up-lit from the ledge level. Finally, the altar painting was lit from both sides, creating a strong focal point and adding drama and contrast to the scene.
