King Abdulaziz International Airport

LOCATION: JEDDAH, KSA
USE: TRANSPORTATION
Scope: INTERNAL LIGHTING DESIGN & DAYLIGHT STUDY

The interior lighting concept plan for the processor hall was divided into ambient, task, and accent lighting.

Ambient lighting is the general lighting that is present throughout the hall and is capable of supporting the least demanding activities in terms of illumination levels and uniformity ratios (circulation and orientation). The proposed strategy was to use indirect lighting mounted on 7 meter tall poles rather than the usual downlights at ceiling height (13 to 24 meters), resulting in lower lighting loads.

Task lighting was added as a second layer, only in areas that required specific lighting levels (check-in, baggage inspection and passport control). This strategy was chosen over the traditional “light-all” approach because it reduced total power loads and their associated operating and maintenance costs.

A third accent layer was then used, which included all of the tactics used to improve overall space perception and architectural composition. This category included elements such as vertical surfaces, artwork, and a dynamic ceiling wash.
