Full Screen

Al Azizia Mosque

LOCATION: Mecca, KSA
USE: WORSHIP
Scope: EXTERNAL, FAÇADE & LANDSCAPE LIGHTING DESIGN

The main goal of the internal lighting was to create a soft and welcoming atmosphere that would connect the building’s architecture with its spiritual purpose.

The lighting strategies used aimed to provide adequate lighting levels, enhance architectural details, and reduce all visual clutter, allowing the visitor to appreciate the magnificence of the interior space. Downlights were recessed in accordance with the ceiling patterns, while cove lights illuminate the vertical planes and create a larger sense of space.

Accents on arches and niches create vertical focal points and enhance the overall architecture, while suspended decorative fixtures mark the center of each area, visually connecting the single and double heights.

The domes were lit from behind the screens, allowing light to spill into the space and project various patterns. This light operates on a dynamic cycle, changing from warm to cool and back to warm white throughout the day. When a call to prayer is issued, the domes change to a soft blue hue, reinforcing the spiritual connection with the user.
